On average we are supposed to drink two liters of water per day, but in that mix add Hong Kong humidity, and the ludicrous amount of buckets of sweat that we need to replace, piled on top of yoga, gym sessions (or hangovers..), and we are talking a unsavory amount of vile Bonaqua.  I remember the day as a newbie expat, when I had my first sip of Bonaqua,  after which I proceeded to shudder and wretch (this was probably due to the copious amount of Cosmos the night before, but let’s be honest, it is truly bitter and disgusting).  I was told I would get used to it.  Negative.  I still loathe it, try to avoid it, but thankfully I no longer chunder at the sight of it.
Of course you can buy Evian, but wouldn’t it be nice to have good old fashioned tap water.  I can hear my Father now… ,”Tap water doesn’t harm anyone…”…  Er actually Dad, it does.
With many types of bacteria and chemicals found in tap water, its best not to drink it, so we don’t have a choice here in Hong Kong not to drink bottled on the go.  But with most of the plastic bottles ending up in landfills, or the ocean the environmental effect from the plastics is quite devastating.

Then along came Bobble.  Oh Beautiful Bobble…Where have you been all my life?  Not only do you look good, but you do good too!  This super stylish water bottle filters straight from the bottle as you drink.  Brainchild of renowned industrial designer Karim Rashid, Bobble features an inbuilt carbon filter, which absorbs nasty chemicals and negative ions.  Genius.  The resulting filtered water tastes smooth and infinitely better than Bonaqua, and meets international water standards.

Each filter lasts 300 bottles, which is about 2 months, after that you just change the filter, fill up with tap water, and you are good-to-go!.  At HK$99, its obviously not a cheap as running into Seven Eleven, but in the long run, it works out the be more cost effective, convenient and environmentally friendly, not to mention stylish.

What not to do to Bobble.

Being lazy, I decided to pop my plastic Bobble bottle in the dishwasher.  It came out as flat as a pancake, so in a moment of panic I poured boiling water from the kettle into it, thinking it would puff back out, but poor little Bobble shrank!  Before my eyes Bobble became half the Bobble he was before.  Remarkably the filter still fit, however not much water fitted in the bottle, so he went to Bobble heaven.  Yellow Bobble is sadly missed, but has been replaced by Blue Bobble who is lovingly hand-washed daily, and is sitting happily by my side as I write.

So remember kids, take care of your Bobble and your Bobble will take care of you…

Ladies, we have a treat in store for you.  Fresh from Milan, The Philip George Salon has introduced a new brand of cosmetics into the 852 -MTJ and its first Asian collection Goldentears.

Brainchild of celebrity make-up artist Massimiliano Della Maggesa, otherwise known as Max The Joker (hence MTJ), the Goldentears collection was designed for strong, modern forward-thinking women, perfect for you Hong Kong hotties!  Max’s illustrious career notes Gianni Versace, The House of Missoni, and Alberta Ferretti as past clients, but most importantly he was senior make-up artist for Italy for M.A.C cosmetics.  Years of  countless celebrity clients, fashion shoots, world tours, and collaborations culminated in the creation of MTJ Cosmetics.

Last week saw the official Hong Kong launch of MTJ and its Goldentears range in Domani restaurant Pacific Place. Massimiliano was joined by renowned hairdresser, Nicola Baroni who helped create the total look by styling the models hair with Napura haircare products.

The collection ranges from natural daytime looks to edgy, bold colours and fluorescents for courageous night time soirées.  But most excitingly, MTJ claim that the formulation of the cosmetics hold tight despite humidity and temperature variation… Hello Hong Kong!

I thought I didn’t care.  The Royal family are a bit like Jaffa Cakes to me.  Never been a massive fan, but totally happy for them to be sitting on a plate of Bourbons.  I might even go in for a nibble of a Jaffa, never more than one, but I appreciate that others love them.  I’ve also been rather indifferent about Kate Middleton, but I have to admit lately she has been growing on me.  She is effortlessly elegant, extremely pretty, very smiley, and very brave.  I am also getting more excited about the impending Royal Wedding.  As a bride to be myself, I seem to be rather obsessed with any wedding, (Gypsy weddings..LOVE) so why would I not be interested?  Not that Im trying to compare, honest!  The build up to Kate and Williams special day is in fact making me more excited about my own, so along with every brit, old woman and gay man in the world, Im going to be glued to the screen watching the wedding.

With only 24 days to go until their big day on the 29th April 2011, Prince William and Kate Middleton will be tying the knot at Westminster Abbey with a star studded guest list with the Prime Minister and Victoria and David Beckham rumoured to be attending.  Memorabilia makers are going bonkers for Kate and William themed mugs, tea towels and the obligatory wedding plates, but I was extremely excited to see that an official Princess Catherine doll has been launched.  Only 10,000 dolls have been produced, so it’s predicted that the Princess Catherine Engagement Doll will be a must-buy for Royal Wedding collectors, and I am lucky (I think) enough to own one of them (wooohooo).

Seven British fashion and design champions have dressed and accessorised the mini Kate, who comes wearing an Issa-esque dress by Pussy Willow, Beatrix Ong heels and a gold Aspinal of London ‘Eaton’ clutch. Of course, no Princess Catherine doll would be complete without that sapphire ring. Step forward Babette Wasserman, who has added the finishing touch with a rose gold-plated amethyst and cubic zirconia rock. It’s ok to spend $450HKD on a plastic doll when it’s a collector’s item, surely?
