Feeling the strain of the wriggly baby inside? Fed up with lying on your back? We sent Helen Wrigglesworth for some well needed pampering before the birth of her first baby.

We might be said to “glow”, but sore feet, tense shoulders, achy backs and graunchy hips are just a sample of the litany of aches and pains that inflict pregnant women. If you’re like me, these niggles are compounded by the fact that for around six months lying on your front is something you can only dream about.

At 36 weeks pregnant and in search of some respite from my aches and pains I headed to the Body Conscious Spa in the Centrium building on Wyndham Street in Central. Following a cup of tea and the opportunity to “chill-my-boots” for a moment, I was ushered into a treatment room by my therapist for the session, the lovely Sinita.

The room was clean and pleasantly furnished with most of the space being occupied by a specially designed massage bed. A large bump sized hole in the middle of the bed, criss-crossed by a lattice of stretchy elastic strips, supports your bump no matter how big or small. It was on this bed that for the first time in months I was able to lie down on my front. It was blissfully comfortable and within seconds of donning the spa’s paper panties and lying face down I was ready to fall asleep and only partially capable of responding to Sinita’s questions about where I was feeling tense and what kind of pressure I’d like applied. Following a moment of meditation and three deep breaths, we were off.

During the 60-minute session Sinita used a special blend of oils suitable for pregnancy and massaged pretty much everything including “the bump” – although only after asking my permission. I have to admit that I’m very protective of “the bump” and was initially skeptical, but she was very gentle and as far as any mother-to-be can tell, the bump loved it too as it was very wriggly for the rest of the afternoon. At the end of the session Sinita gave me a synopsis of where I was most tense and what I could do to relieve the tension on my own. All in all I felt like I’d been in very capable and experienced hands throughout.

My only gripe (and it is a relatively small gripe) was that my feet would dearly have loved a little more attention BUT, I did say at the start “it’s my shoulders that are stiff”, so I can’t really complain.

This was definitely my best pregnancy massage yet. Previously I’ve had to lie down on one side and been gently rubbed as opposed to what I would call properly massaged. Not my idea of tension relief. At Body Conscious however, the combination of being able to lie down on my front and a therapist not afraid of using a bit of elbow grease were just divine. I only hope there is time to fit in one more session before it’s all too late………….

X factor
Has to be the brilliant bed (of which the spa has two)

Things you should know
There is plenty of evidence supporting the theory that a relaxed woman is likely to experience less pain during labour than a tense woman. What more incentive do you need?

For those Mums who’ve missed the boat on the pre-natal massage experience, Body Conscious also offer post-natal massages that recognise how the demands of early motherhood stress the body, particularly around the upper neck and back. These sessions are tailored to meet individual needs.

Cost
60 mins – $910
90 mins – $1,155

Say NO to sunshine! Most of us can't help feeling our best with a bit of colour in our cheeks, as much as we try the porcelein look, it just doesnt work on everyone. We all know the risks associated with sunbathing, so we sent tan-loving Tory Wright to try out the next best option, the brand new Spray Tan in the fabulously funky Salon Chandler in Lan Kwai Fong.

If like me, you are keen to have a healthy glow but don’t have the patience or dedication to bake yourself in the sun, the spray tan might be your answer. I recently took the plunge and decided to have a spray tan before a friends wedding. So I headed down to CHANDLER, a super modern and funky beauty salon conveniently placed in the middle of Lan Kwai Fong, for one of their Spray Tanning sessions. One sessions costs HK$400 and they use an airbrush technique (for a more natural look) with a liquid tanning lotion called Sunless Tanning which is hypoallergenic and can even be used on pregnant women, so get involved girls!

In the salon I was greeted by the extremely friendly beautician extraordinaire, Dolma, who’s accolades include Personal Beautician for the Dubai Royal Family. Well, I must be in safe hands…although I’m to sure how many spray tans the royal family would have had?? I suppose if something goes drastically wrong I can drown my sorrows in Stormies, so let’s get started!

I donned the attractive shower cap and paper knickers and stood in the spray cubical feeling rather vulnerable. Dolma then rubbed some oily solution onto my hands and feet (NB make sure you get a lot of this, it will stop those tell tale fake tan hands). The fake tan was sprayed by Dolma with machine a kin to a weed killer pump that my dad would use in the garden. As instructed I turned through various positions, the amount of spray she used dictated the level of tan. I went for a natural tan and the spraying was over in about 5 minutes. It then took about 10 – 20 minutes to dry.

I didn’t shower that night (as instructed!) and the tan developed over night. When I got up in the morning I was a little surprised by the change in colour, it was quite deep brown and there was a definite orange tinge BUT I was warned not to worry as after showering some colour will wash off, which it did. However I still felt the colour was a pretty strong, this was fixed by using a body scrub. My one complaint was that my hands and feet were much darker than my body, but this was fixed again with a lot of scrubbing. I imagine that this could have been avoided by having a good exfolition before the spray, and possibly by using more of the oily liquid Dolma used during the tanning session.

All in all I was pleased with the the tan, and Dolma. But it definitely looked best after about 4 days, when it had faded a little and so looked more natural. I looked tanned at the wedding, and no-one knew it was fake. Perfect!

Top Tips

Make sure you cover your hands, feet (including palms and soles) and elbows during the tanning session

Make sure you have dark coloured clothes & underware to put on after the tanning session in case some of the tan rubs off.

Have a good scrub at home the night before you have the spray, concentrating on your hands and feet.

I would suggest making the spray tan appointment at the end of the day and making sure you don’t have any important engagements that evening as it is best not to shower until the next morning.

If you’re having the spray tan for a special event have it 3 – 4 days before
