Guerlain’s latest offering – launched exclusively at Harvey Nicks – is the latest must-have for any self-respecting dandy.

The French perfumier tell us it’s inspired by Arsène Lupin, France’s fictional gentleman thief and a favourite of Jean-Paul Guerlain, the last of the company’s family perfumers.

There are two scents on offer – Dandy, and Voyou, (scoundrel), each tailored to represent Lupin’s deceptive and contrasting character. The BBHK crew were keen to get their hands on sample, so when a suspiciously cryptic blank package arrived on the BBHK doorstep last week, it could mean only one thing… a special package from Arsène!

We sampled the Dandy variant, and it has become an instant hit among the team in the office.

Firstly, it looks sexy as hell. The 100ml bottle is presented within a thin ebony frame. The beautifully understated bottle design smacks of the reassurance only a quality perfumier the stature of Guerlain can attest.

The scent itself is equally bold and impressive. Chic and powerful. Quite unlike anything we’ve smelt for a long time. It’s a rich, dark blend of smoky leather and powdery violet. It’s peppery with a very definite bitter orange overtone. Perhaps most importantly, it really lingers. You’ll need no more than two or three sprays first thing in the morning and it will last you all day.

Lupin’s roguish side is represented by Voyou, the other half of this Excluisifs collection. In contrast, Voyou is aromatic and herbal with hints of Artemisia, coriander and piquant pepper.

Neither are cheap. At HK$1,880 for a 100ml bottle it is an investment, but it is a price reflective of the quality of the liquid the Guerlain team have produced. True to the man it’s based on, the fragrance is also hard to find – you’ll only find it at Harvey Nicks (one of just 50 outlets chosen worldwide). And if you’re still having trouble locating a bottle for yourself, just head for the huddle of suspicious-looking tall, dark, handsome, trench coat and sunglasses-wearing briefcase-carrying strangers – you’ll not go far wrong!

Diptique, one of Paris’ longest established perfume houses, famed for their delightful and elegant scents and candles have just released Vétyvério, their new unisex scent into Hong Kong.

According to a spokesman for the company “Diptyque has had a fun time blurring the lines by blending perfumery’s archetypal raw materials, namely masculine vetiver and feminine flower bouquets. This fragrance is subtle, sensitive, and captures the power of unquestionable elegance”.

Unsurprisingly the base of this perfume is vetivier from Indonesia and the Caribbean.  Additional notes include Turkish Rose to bring out its feminine side, organic Madagascan ylang ylang, and for its masculine balance,  peppery geranium from Egypt, and hints of Italian mandarin. To round off this unisex scent, spices were added such as nutmeg, clove, carrot seeds, and cedar.

Balenciaga Paris, the latest perfume from the french fashion house has hit the Hong Kong shelves.  Designer by master perfumer Oliver Polge, and fronted my muse Charlotte Gainsbourg, French singer and actress and daughter of famed French actor and director, Serge Gainsbourg.

The labels  first major fragrance launch since Cristobal in 1998, Balenciaga Paris is a light summer fragrance, with demure Violet, Airy Blossom and Delicate Peppery Notes. Olivier Polge skillfully  integrates redistilled wood such as cedar and patchouli. Floral essences are represented by carnation and violet, and we at BBHK love it.  We are long time fans of Cristobal, and we think Balenciaga have outdone themselves with this floral, yet not sickly, and extremely elegant summer scent.

Nicholas Ghesquière, creative director for the iconic house of Balenciaga, describes the creation of Balenciaga Paris in the following words, “As soon as I arrived at Balenciaga, over 10 years ago, I wanted to create a fragrance – a classic and chic fragrance worthy of a prestigious couture house, but a fragrance that also tells an unprecedented story.  I wanted Balenciaga Paris to be a fragrance that makes a mark and haunts the memory.  I also wanted Balenciaga Paris to be a fragrance with delicate mystery.  I would like women to discover Balenciaga Paris and have the impression that they have always known it.”

A sign that you have actually ‘made it’ in the world of celebrity is the launch of your own perfume. Mariah, J-Lo, Britney, and Christina have one, and now Beyonce has followed suit and created her own fragrance. After appearing as the face of many other perfume products over the years, Beyonce has launched Heat, her first eau de parfum.

A sneak peak of the perfumes posters show Beyonce wearing a sexy red satin dressing gown with the caption ‘Catch the Fever’.  In the TV advert for the campaign the star sings a seductive version of fever while she writes around in a bath before posing in a raunchy kimono.

Beyonce told Women’s Wear Daily: ‘It’s called Heat, so we wanted the ads to be really steamy and dewy. My sexiest moments are when I’m just getting out of the tub or the shower and I’m clean, so I wanted to incorporate that in the ads. The dress was this liquid-y satin. The song Fever I did years ago and always loved it.  I got to sing it a bit more whispery, more natural’

It looks like she has put more emphasis has been put on the advert (i.e. what she looks like) that the perfume, We are still none the wiser of what is smells like?  I wonder if it smells of her armpits? Will I bag myself a rapstar and private jet if I smother myself in it?  Unlikely.   Im curious about  how much input the ‘celebrity’ has into the creation process of a scent.  Very few people in the world possess the ‘nose’ that can create viable beautiful scents, and I doubt Beyonce, or J-Lo have the skill. I have to say even if the smell is incredible I would have a tough time actually purchasing a celebrity scent.  Not since my Robbie Williams pillow case have I bought into celebrity merchandise, and I doubt I will buy this, but if its nice, someone can buy it for me and Ill pretend its from somewhere else!

I said Gawd Damn! There is hope in life.  A life of non stop partying and Kate Moss still looks hot as hell!  We’re loving this new ad for YSL Parisienne, and loving the Depeche Mode tune even more…

Parisienne is the new younger and sassier sister to Paris, still rose scented, but with hints of cranberry, blackberry and patchouli.. Sounds good enough to eat!

The fragrance is to be launched in HK on 8th September, for which we wait with baited breath…
